On 18 April, representatives of the Zaporizhzhia Chamber of Commerce and Industry took part in an online meeting of the Entrepreneurs’ Committee in the Field of Energy Efficiency at the Ukrainian CCI. The meeting was dedicated to the prospects of a new industry in Ukraine – biomethane production.
On 20 March 2024, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law on Amendments to the Customs Code of Ukraine on Customs Clearance of Biomethane (No. 9456, is being signed by the President).
According to the Law, the customs clearance of biomethane transported by pipeline is carried out in the same manner as for natural gas. This means that the customs procedures currently applied to natural gas will apply to biomethane.
The speaker of the meeting was Georgii Geletukha, Chairman of the Board of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, who spoke about the main trends in the development of the industry in the EU and the prospects for biomethane production in Ukraine.
So, what are the benefits of developing biomethane production?
Biomethane is absolutely ready for injection into the gas network, unlike hydrogen. No investment is required to modernise gas networks and equipment.
It is currently the cheapest renewable gas available.
Biomethane plants, in addition to biomethane, generate digestate, which can become the main organic fertiliser for reviving Ukrainian soils.
